Real-life lessons in savings and finance.
In 1995, LOC Credit Union opened its first student-run credit union at East Middle School in Farmington Hills. Today, LOC is a proud partner with Farmington Public Schools, Hartland Consolidated Schools and Howell Public Schools and operates 19 in-school branches. Our in-school credit union program and this great community partnership strengthen student advancement as a result of exposure to positive community role models. During the 2019-20 school year, 710 student employees processed 4,533 transactions, helping individuals save a total of $83,995.03
This unique program consists of a full-service LOC branch inside the school. Our student-run credit unions are managed by students with the supervision of an LOC employee. Student employees gain hands-on experience on how to run a branch and they perform duties of the various positions available at a financial institution. Not only does this program teach valuable skills to the students working the credit union, it also gives all students real-life lessons in savings and finance. Some ways we hope to accomplish this include:
- Resume writing and interviewing techniques
- Professionalism and team work
- Developing responsibility and leadership skills
- Increasing student confidence
- Counting money efficiently
- Providing financial education classroom presentations
- Importance of having healthy savings habits
- Interpersonal and communication skills
- Increase math skills and more

Who Can Use a Student-Run Credit Union Branch
Students and staff are able to open an account, make deposits and do withdrawals at our in-school branches. Students are encouraged to open a savings account to save for events such as holiday gift giving, field trip expenses, college savings or sporting activities.
Account applications are available and can be turned in at each student-run credit union branch. In addition, accounts can be opened at any LOC branch location. Student accounts need parent/guardian's proof of identification, a Social Security number and a minimum $5 deposit. If the student is already a member of LOC, it is not necessary to open another account.
When you become a member, you can enjoy the many benefits of our Quackers Club and Teen Club. They have been designed especially to meet the needs of our young members.
